The test results should be reported
by the consulting engineers in February or March. The
Planning Staff was also advised that a 300-foot mini-
mum buffer would be provided between the landfill and
adjacent properties.
The Town of Hillsborough also responded with a comment
about its Thoroughfare Plan for the area around Maple
Hill. A realignment of Baldwin Road (SR 1554 ) west of
the site is proposed, but is not considered a priority
transportation improvement.
If a property is listed on the National Register, it
is not completely protected from a construction
project involving state or federal funds and/or
permits. For example, if a landfill were proposed on
the property adjacent to Maple Hill, the project would
be reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office
in accordance with Section 106 of the National
Historic Preservation Act and the North Carolina
General Statutes 121-12a.
The Board of Commissioners has three options:
1) Approve the nomination,
2) Disapprove the nomination and state how it does
not meet the National Register criteria for
evaluation, or
3) Take no action, which constitutes an approval.
The Board of Commissioners and the Historic
Preservation Commission must separately notify the
State and the property owners of their recommendations
by January 12, 1994 . The nomination will be presented
to the North Carolina National Register Advisory
Committee on January 13, 1994 . The Committee's
recommendation then will be forwarded to the National
Register Office.
RECOMMENDATION: The Administration recommends approval of the
nomination of Maple Hill to the National Register of
Historic Places, and that the Chair be authorized to
sign the Local Governing Board comment form to be
forwarded to the State Historic Preservation Office.
