Attachment 1 3
ORANGE COUNTY SENIOR GAMES
DESCRIPTION
Senior Games is a year-round health promotion program for adults age 55 and older, consisting
of wellness workshops, training clinics, instructional classes, special events, and local and state
competitive games. There are opportunities to enhance, improve and even l6ngthen the lives of
this population.
Event competitions are held each spring in April. In 1994, competitions will be offered in the
following Official North Carolina Senior Games Events:
Basketball Throw Football Throw Swimming
Bowling Golf Table Tennis
Croquet Horseshoes Tennis
Cycling Shot-put Track Events
Discus Softball Throw Walking
GOALS
• To promote health and fitness among older adults
• To stress the importance of regular exercise throughout life
• To provide social opportunities and a spirit of camaraderie
• To provide competitive experiences on a local, state and national level
BACKGROUND
The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May, 1988, with 69 older adults
participating in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, and 100 Orange County
citizens volunteering for various services with the Games. In the years since 1988, the numbers
have steadily grown, as we placed more emphasis on year-round programs of wellness, and
added new athletic events for the Spring Games. In the local games in April of 1993, we offered
16 events, with 132 senior citizens taking part in 422 separate sports competitions.
Orange County Senior Games is one of 45 local Senior Games in the state and is sanctioned by
North Carolina Senior Games, Inc. While the Games provide competitive experiences, the
emphasis of the local program is on participation and a healthy lifestyle. With the rapidly
increasing population of older adults in Orange County(more than 14,000 in 1990), the growth
potential for this valuable and popular program is enormous!
COORDINATING AGENCIES
• Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department
• Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department
• Orange County Department on Aging
• Orange County Recreation and Parks Department
BENEFITS OF SPONSORSHIP
• Exposure of business or organization to approximately 14,000 people in Orange County
• Concentrated visibility to the specific population of older adults
• Recognition at programs and presentations
• Acknowledgment in the official Orange County Senior Games Program brochure
• Increase in patronage of your local business or organization
