BOARD OF ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS (BOCC) <br />GOALS — 2015 UPDATE <br />FOR DISCUSSIONS PURPOSES <br />or neglected. <br />• Training is offered to Project EngAGE <br />participants to educate them on the subject and <br />to be able to assist community members when <br />these types of issues arise. <br />• Objective 5.1: Promote lifelong learning of <br />older adults through increased access to <br />continuing education classes and programs <br />throughout the county. <br />• Lifelong learning is the cornerstone of Senior <br />Center programming. Hundreds of programs <br />are offered annually. The Senior Center <br />Program Advisory Committees play a key role <br />in helping develop the programs. <br />• Objective 6.4: Increase the capacity of the <br />Department on Aging to expand activities <br />available to older adults living in Orange <br />North Carolina State Cooperative Extension <br />• Numerous 4 -H youth programs were <br />implemented that included NC 4 -H Citizenship <br />Focus and 4H Congress, which provide <br />leadership development skills. 4 -H continues to <br />work with Scruggs Elementary School and <br />Cameron Park Elementary School in the <br />implementation of a comprehensive program <br />surrounding community gardens and local <br />foods. <br />• Teachers were enabled to reach the students in <br />their class as well as serve as teacher leaders for <br />their colleagues who were interested in <br />participating in the program next year. <br />.: <br />North Carolina State Cooperative Extension <br />• Each year, over 9,200 youth are engaged in <br />after school programs supported by CES, <br />4H staff. This is the time of day when <br />unattended youth most often commit <br />juvenile crime. 4H engaged 7,500 youth in <br />local schools, clubs, community, and <br />special interest groups here in Orange <br />County. <br />Family and Consumer Science has <br />developed the "Healthy Eating, Physical <br />Activity and Chronic Disease Risk <br />Reduction Program" which includes <br />Serosae Food Safety Certification, Canning <br />College, Eat Smart Move More Weigh <br />
