<br />Page 2 <br />o Performs other related duties as assigned. <br />KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: <br />o Knowledge of modern dentistry and recent developments in the field of dentistry. <br />o Ability to treat both adults and children as a general practice dentist. <br />o Ability to deal with combative children in a calm, effective manner. <br />o Ability to deal with culturally diverse populations in the provision of dental clinical <br />services. <br />o Ability to prepare and deliver lectures on dental health education to professional and <br />community groups. <br />o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, <br />representatives from the LTNC School of Dentistry, and representatives from <br />civic/community groups and school systems. <br />o Ability to clinically supervise both professional and paraprofessional employees. <br />SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Dental Health Program Director assigns work in terms of <br />division goals and objectives. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation <br />of division activities. <br />GUIDELII~TES: Guidelines include state and federal laws and regulations, program contracts; <br />county, department and division policies and procedures; and clinical protocols. These <br />guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. <br />COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied administrative, clinical dental and technical duties. <br />Contact with communicable diseases, staffing shortages and the need to treat patients who <br />consider dental care a low priority contribute to the complexity of the work. <br />SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide clinical dental treatment to <br />adults and children. Successful performance in this position helps prevent disease and promotes <br />and protects the public' s health and well-being. <br />PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, <br />medical providers, pharmacists, clinicians from other agencies, representatives from UNC <br />School of Dentistry, dental residents, dental students, state agency representatives and the <br />general public. <br />Dentist, Health <br />
