14 <br />Page 2 of 3 <br />Jon Arvik <br />Economic Development Advisory Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) <br />Background, education and experience relevant to this board: <br />See (1) above; in addition, my most recent positions involved the application of specific technical <br />and business management capabilities to economic growth for private, academic, and <br />government agencies. <br />Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: <br />It has been made plain that the BOCC has made every effort to increase the public good without <br />a commensurate increase in taxes. However, it is necessary that continued growth of <br />populations and public services will require an increase in income from new tax resources such <br />as a growing tax base of successful businesses. I have considerable experience in these areas, <br />and would like to apply them in a productive manner. <br />Conflict of Interest: <br />Supplemental Questions: <br />Orange County Planning Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) <br />Please list the work /volunteer experience /qualifications that would add to your expertise <br />for this board. <br />Volunteer: participated as pro bono technical resource in environmental issue management for <br />State and County efforts to evaluate risk /benefit proposals, also preformed as expert witness for <br />environmental groups opposing potential use of public lands for environmentally detrimental <br />potential pollution practices; advised private legal and commercial entities on sound business <br />practices in renewable resource utilization, health risks, and business startup practices. <br />What unique perspective can you bring to the Orange County Planning Board? <br />A combination of successful product development and commercialization of products, <br />successful private business creation and management, successful coordination of commercial <br />business, academic research, and government agency activities, successful public relations <br />programs, and knowledge of the needs of government agencies for successful management of <br />their programs. <br />What do you see as the responsibilities of this board, and what do you hope to <br />accomplish if appointed? <br />Planning Board: provide complete and accurate recommendations to the BOCC in regard to <br />preparing that body to make confident and appropriate decisions in the realm of growth <br />opportunities for the County. The breadth and depth of my expertise and experience makes my <br />service as an Advisory Board member unique. <br />What do you consider to be be the most important issues facing Orange County related <br />to growth? <br />Maintenance of the rural atmosphere of the County while growing revenues in an economically <br />viable and sustainable manner; providing required services to the citizens of the County as <br />population and commercial growth continues; countering the health and environmental risks that <br />growth presents. <br />What role should the Planning Board take in guiding and regulating growth? <br />This Board should be the lead avisory resource for the BOCC in their responsibility for both <br />short- and long -term success and quality of life of the citizens of the County. <br />How would you, as a member of the Planning Board, contribute to the implementation of <br />the Board of Commissioners' adopted Goals and Priorities? <br />Assure that recommendations provided to the BOCC regarding each of their Goals and Priorities are technically, <br />ethically, and economically valid and reliable. <br />
