Resolutions Recognizing North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame Inductees from <br />2 Orange County <br />3 The Board considered five resolutions recognizing Jaki Shelton Green, Allan Gurganus, <br />4 Louis D. Rubin, Jr., Lee Smith, and Elizabeth Spencer for their induction into the North Carolina <br />5 Literary Hall of Fame and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br />6 Jaki Shelton Green was the only member in attendance. <br />7 <br />8 Commissioner Rich read the following resolution: <br />9 <br />10 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />11 <br />12 RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JAKI SHELTON GREEN, <br />13 A NORTH CAROLINA LITERARY HALL OF FAME <br />14 INDUCTEE FROM ORANGE COUNTY <br />15 <br />16 WHEREAS, the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame celebrates and promotes the rich literary <br />17 heritage of North Carolina by commemorating its leading authors and <br />18 encouraging the continued flourishing of great literature; and <br />19 <br />20 WHEREAS, the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame was established under the leadership of <br />21 Sam Ragan, Poet Laureate and Southern Pines newspaper editor; and <br />22 <br />23 WHEREAS, the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame was authorized by a Joint Resolution of <br />24 the North Carolina General Assembly in July 1993, and formally established in <br />25 May 1996 by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Cultural <br />26 Resources to the North Carolina Writers' Network; and <br />27 <br />28 WHEREAS, the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame has recognized Jaki Shelton Green, who <br />29 has significant ties to Orange County; and <br />30 <br />31 WHEREAS, Orange County takes pride in its historic role as a center of art and learning, and is <br />32 proud to celebrate County residents as exemplars of the literary community <br />33 whose words enrich our lives; <br />34 <br />35 NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does <br />36 hereby recognize and congratulate Jaki Shelton Green as an inductee into the <br />37 North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, and expresses its appreciation of her and <br />38 her literary works as cultural assets representing Orange County. <br />39 <br />40 This, the 9th day of December 2014. <br />41 <br />42 Jaki Shelton Green thanked the Board for all of their support and said it has been a <br />43 wonderful journey. <br />44 <br />45 A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Jacobs to <br />46 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the attached resolutions recognizing Jaki Shelton <br />47 Green, Allan Gurganus, Louis D. Rubin, Jr., Lee Smith, and Elizabeth Spencer for their <br />48 induction into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. <br />49 <br />50 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />
