4 <br /> C6065-12/95 <br /> ESL COORDINATOR <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs intermediate paraprofessional work coordinating the English as a Second language <br /> (ESL)program in Orange County; does related work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. Limited supervision is exercised over volunteers. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Coordinates the ESL program including establishing policies and procedures; <br /> Selects, orders and maintains ESL materials; <br /> Manages the ESL budget; <br /> Recruits volunteers for ESL tutor positions; <br /> Develops, implements and coordinates ESL training workshops for tutors; <br /> Works with a variety of community agencies, groups and including Orange County and Chapel <br /> Hill Schools, Durham Tech Community College, and the Literacy Council to make and receive <br /> referrals,provide volunteers and to publicize the literacy program; <br /> Provides students in need of English instruction with appropriate tutors; <br /> Coordinates and sponsors bi-annual ESL meetings; <br /> Maintains records,keeps statistics and composes correspondence; <br /> Assists county departments with Spanish translation requests; <br /> Performs related.tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> General knowledge teaching and training methods; general knowledge of ESL teaching methods; <br /> general knowledge of County's policies and procedures affecting the program; general <br /> knowledge of federal guidelines governing the program; working knowledge of services offered <br /> by public and non-profit community agencies in the County; general knowledge of techniques <br /> used to recruit, train and motivate volunteers; ability to establish and maintain effective working <br /> relationships with volunteers, students, schools, community agencies, other employees and the <br /> general public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited <br /> college or university with major course work in education, english or related field and at least <br /> one years experience working with volunteer recruitment and teaching. <br />
