4
INTRODUCTION
This document presents Mattson, Alexander and Associates' proposal for the
completion of the Orange County historic architectural resources survey, and
the preparation of a manuscript, suitable for publication, of the architectural
history of the county. This proposal was prepared in response to the Request
for Proposal (RFP) issued by the Orange County Planning Department.
The project will be conducted by Mattson, Alexander and Associates, Inc. The
company is well qualified to undertake this project based on extensive
previous experience in the survey and evaluation of rural architecture in
North Carolina. The two-person staff has conducted numerous architectural
history projects that have entailed both architectural surveys and related
historical essays. Currently, the firm is completing a National Register
nomination for the town of Belmont, a local historical designation report for
the town of Cornelius, and architectural surveys of Tyrrell and Northampton
counties. All of this work is being conducted according to the standards of the
North Carolina Division of Archives and History. Richard L. Mattson has also
published The History and Architecture of Nash County, North Carolina (1987),
a work closely related in scope to the proposed Orange County project.
WORK PLAN
Phase 1. Completion of Survey
During the first phase of the project, an estimated 75 properties will be
evaluated for possible inclusion in the architectural inventory of Orange
County. A selected number of these resources will be surveyed and annotated
on U.S.G.S. topographic maps. All survey work will be conducted in accordance
with standards set forth by the State Historic Preservation Office, North
Carolina Division of Archives and History.
Phase 2. Preparation of Architectural Historical Manuscript
The second phase will consist of the preparation of the manuscript suitable for
publication. This manuscript will include both an historical/architectural
essay and entries on selected, surveyed properties in the county. Both the
essay and the entries will concern broad patterns of development as well as
specific individuals and buildings. The manuscript will deal with vernacular
architecture and cultural landscapes, as well as high-style or unique
buildings. It will address such themes as the development of plantations and
middling farmsteads, the rise of farm tenantry after the Civil War, the
evolution of African American communities, rural industrial growth, the
emergence of crossroads settlements, and the influence of waterways, roads,
and rail lines on shifting patterns of settlement. While the manuscript will
focus on rural Orange County, the roles of Chapel Hill and Hillsborough in
shaping the rural landscape will also be discussed. Documentary maps and
photographs will be identified for inclusion in the essay.
