ao -
STATEMENT SUBMITTED BY UNITED PARCEL SERVICE
United Parcel Service (UPS) is appreciative of the
opportunity to participate in the 'Town. of Chapel Hill' s
Small Area Planning Process, and, in particular, the
Northwest Small Area Plan Work Group. We have attended
some of the Group' s past meetings and have reviewed the
July 19, 1994 draft of the Northwest Small Area Plan
Report .
At the outset, let us state that UPS supports the
Group' s efforts and believe that we are in general
agreement with the provisions of the Report . Our primary
concern in this process is to assure that our present
facility is in conformance with whatever zoning
classification is ultimately adopted for our land. Our
initial reading of the proposed Plan indicates that our
land will be included in the "Employment Campus" zoning
category. As you know, this is a new zoning category that
will have to be defined. Our goal is to make sure that
our present use will be permitted use within that
category.
Our present facility is what we call a Package Center
and its characteristics are as follows :
Approximately 75 employees
An 18 , 000 sq. ft . office/warehouse facility located on
approximately 8 3/4 acres .
Packages are delivered each night from our regional
distribution center (s) to the Package Center.
Each weekday morning the delivered packages are sorted
and loaded onto the package cars at the Package
Center . (These are the brown vehicles you are use to
seeing. )
The package cars leave the Package Center (normally
before 9 : 00 A.M. ) to deliver and pick-up packages and
return to the Package Center (beginning around 5 : 00
P .M. )
The picked-up packages are sorted and then delivered
to the regional distribution center (s) and the process
starts over again.
There is a minimum amount of walk-in traffic during
the day. On average, approximately 50 customers per
day individually deliver packages to the Package
Center .
