48
Ward replied that they are preserved by the fact that
they are in the forest. All of these sites have been
mapped for years and have been avoided by logging
operations. Ward starting doing an inventory for the
Duke Forest sites 10 years ago and began to see how
well these have been preserved in the forest and
recognized that they were unique in the forest. This
wetted his interest in this 19th century farmstead
archeology.
White stated that the Commission is seeing a
significant number of sites and White is trying to
determine which of the ,14 Duke sites might also serve
and can a comparison be made between them?
Ward stated that the other 13 may have the potential,
but it is not known until testing is done on them. If
all 14 had that potential, they would meet National
Register Criterion D and it would not be a matter of
which one is best.
Allison stated that there seems to be no intent to find
out what is there; to do any archeological studies
other than the ones that have been done. Can we infer
that Duke intends to excavate and find out what is
there and publish that?
Ward replied that the purpose of the Register, as he
understands it, is not to excavate sites, but to
preserve sites. As long as nothing is happening to the
sites, and until someone has enough money and time and
expertise to put together a team to do research on the
site, it is hoped that nobody would do anything there.
Rich asked to clarify that if these sites have been
preserved for these last 50 years by Duke Forest, will
Duke preserve this site without a nomination?
Ward replied that he would hope they would.
Rich asked again to clarify that Duke doesn't need a
nomination to preserve it. They own the land and could
preserve it forever if they want to; assuming no
catastrophe?
Ward replied sure, assuming no catastrophe.
Allison asked if there has been any other disruption
aside from the maintenance of the power line?
Ward replied that the structures that they are aware of
7
