47
T. Dickinson opened the floor for questions, comments
and opinions from the Commission.
Rich asked Ward, of the many sites in North Carolina
that are well preserved, what is being done about
these? Is anything being done about the other sites in
Orange County?
Ward replied that this is one of the best preserved
sites in Orange County that he is aware of.
White asked Ward to speak about the Couch site which is
in Duke Forest. Would that be a similar kind of site
to this one in terms of what it might yield?
Ward replied that the Couch site probably would be a
similar kind of site, as well as some of the others
having the potential for intact deposits. Intact
deposits were demonstrated at this particular site
(Alexander Hogan) and that is why they are going on
with its nomination to the Register. On these other
sites, some kind of testing would have to be done in
order to verify what might be there.
White asked if classifications were done . . . We are
looking for some kind of a unique situation.
Ward replied that on archeological sites they are not
necessarily looking for anything unique. They are
dealing more with patterns than uniqueness. The fact
that makes this site significant is that there are
things there that are buried relatively close to the
locations where they were used. This is the primary
prerequisite for conducting their research to conduct
an excavation; is if there is something there that is
buried from the past that has not been disturbed, moved
around, bull dozed out, plowed out, eroded out, etc.
Rich asked if these other sites also have this.
Ward replied, sure.
Rich asked if any boring were made on these other
sites?
Ward replied that he did not know if Duke has done any;
Ward has not.
White asked if they (Duke) have chosen to preserve
these other sites as well.
6
