5
If the employee uses the preferred provider physician network, the
employee benefits are better than those under the current plan in that the
employee co-insurance amount for general services is 10 percent rather
than 20 percent.
- If the employee does not use the preferred care physicians then the
employee pays higher deductible and out of pocket amounts than
currently.
The preferred care physician network includes the following:
County Preferred Care Physicians
Alamance 81
Durham 796
Orange 631
Wake 462
The preferred care hospitals currently include UNC Hospitals, Duke,
Durham Regional and Wake Medical Center, among others.
During the period from June 1, 1994 through May 31, 1995,participants in
the current BC/BS Traditional plan made 1,793 physician visits. Of these
1,287 or 72 percent were to physicians who currently are preferred
providers and 506 or 28 percent were to physicians who are not.
Effective October 1, 1995, Duke private diagnostic clinic physicians will
no longer be covered as preferred care physicians, unless the physician
contracts individually with BC/BS. Current Traditional plan participants
made 163 visits to these physicians in the covered period. If these are
counted as non-preferred physicians,the number of non-preferred
physician visits is 669 or 37 percent.
In summary for those approximately 37 percent of physician visits which involve
non-preferred care physicians, the employee may still choose to see that
physician. However, for such visits the employee will pay higher deductibles
($300 vs $200 for an individual) and out of pocket amounts ($2,000 vs $1,000 for
an individual). If the employee elects to see a preferred care physician instead, he
or she will pay the same deductible and out of pocket amount as presently, but a
lesser co-insurance amount(10 instead of 20 percent).
The County may change the BC/BS Traditional Plan to a BC/BS Preferred
Provider Plan and still offer the additional plan option of the BC/BS Personal
Care Plan(a health maintenance organization) as it does now. Options A, B and
C all provide for continuing the BC/BS Personal Care Plan.
Sole Provider Contract
Option C provides for a sole provider or exclusive contract with BC/BS through
