"Public Health is what we, as a society, do
collectively to assure conditions in which people can be healthy" These words openned the summary
of a report of the Institute of Medicine on the future of public health. In light of this the report
recommended that health agencies at the local level assess the health status of its citizens, select
problems of most concern and joint hands to reduce the negative effect of these conditions.
The Orange County Board of Commissioners at the recommendation of the Board of Health, UNC
Hospitals, the School of Public Health and Piedmont Health Services is about to establish a
community task force to work toward achieving better health for our people. Opinion leaders from
many walks of life: educators, policy-makers, administrators, providers, consumers, young and old
alike are being invited to serve on the Orange County Healthy Carolinians Task Force. The members
invited have been chosen because their opinions are valued, they have a genuine interest in the health
and well-being of our people and have shown a commitment to being involved in community
processes to find and apply solutions to local problems. Many community leaders have identified you
as a person who has these characteristics.
It is my privilage, therefore to invite you, on behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the Board
of Health, to a meeting to pursue the formation of this task force. The meeting will be held on
August 28, 1995, 12:00 - 1:30 pm, at the UNC-Hospitals Administration Office Building on Friday
Drive beyond the Friday Center. An agenda for the meeting is enclosed as well as a list of those
individuals and agency heads who have been invited to participate.
Please indicate on the enclosed return card whether you will attend this meeting or designate someone
to act on your behalf.
SOUTHERN ORANGE OFFICE Carr Mill Mau • Suite 225 • 100 N Greensboro Sheet • Carrboro, NC 27510 • 919 968-2022
