2 <br /> RESOLUTION <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> TO <br /> OPPOSE SITING OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE FACILITY <br /> WHEREAS, a site on the Wake side of the border with Chatham County is under <br /> consideration for a "low-level" radioactive waste disposal facility and a license <br /> application has been submitted by Chem-Nuclear Systems, Inc. for the Wake/Chatham <br /> site; and <br /> WHEREAS, Chatham County Board of Commissioners have appointed a citizens <br /> committee and staff that have sought expert opinion from consultants in hydrogeology <br /> and other relevant fields on the proposed site and have closely monitored the site <br /> studies and license review process for over 4 years; and <br /> WHEREAS, the opinion of these consultants is that the site does not meet licensing <br /> requirements that would reasonably assure the health, safety and welfare of Chatham <br /> citizens now and in the future; and <br /> WHEREAS, others including Wake County's consultants, state regulators ;and state <br /> reviewers are in substantial agreement that the site and the Chem-Nuclear license <br /> application do not currently and may never meet license requirements; and <br /> WHEREAS, it would cost tens of millions more dollars of public money to continue <br /> consideration of this site according to state reviewers; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Orange <br /> County that the Board opposes the continued consideration of the Wake/Chatham site <br /> for a radioactive waste disposal facility. <br /> Adopted this, the 2nd day of October, 1995. <br /> Moses Carey, Jr., Chair <br /> ATTEST: <br /> Beverly A.
