Phillips is a <br /> neighborhood school, with many students from the surrounding homes walking or riding <br /> bikes to school. The enrollment at Phillips is 625 children, serving 6th to 8th grade <br /> students. The school offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade <br /> having two electives per semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign <br /> languages such as Spanish, French and Latin; Exploring Life Skills; Exploring Family <br /> and Consumer Sciences; Video Production; Ceramics and Sculpture; Visual Arts; Band <br /> and Orchestra. The school also offers programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted <br /> Education and English as a Second Language. <br /> Phillips has a diverse racial composition: White (49%), Asian (20%), Black (12%), <br /> Hispanic (11%), Multi-Racial (7%) and American Indian/Alaskan Native (<1%) <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. During the 2013-2014 <br /> school year, the students enjoyed the following performances: <br /> Transit Vocal Band, 6th and 7th graders. This a capella group from Raleigh performed <br /> classical and popular songs, tracing the origin of a capella from the Monks through the <br /> contemporary. This Texas-based group of <br /> young men performed its act, Takin' It to the Streets, in February in one performance for <br /> the entire student body. These inspirational performers, formerly considered at risk, <br /> found.focus through dance and talked not just about dance, but about character and <br /> diversity. This New York-based blues musician, composer, actor, <br /> director and writer performed a set tracing blues from Mississippi Delta to modern times. <br /> He talked about his personal journey in following his passion for music and the historical <br /> influences along the way.
