<br /> Organizational Profile- Mission and History
<br /> Our mission,since 1991,when The DooR to DooR program of UNC Health Care was
<br /> founded in association with UNC Hospital Administrators and Physicians, is to bring life
<br /> and joy and solace to the patients,their families and the care giving staff by integrating into
<br /> the hospital environment the gifts of our community's finest artists. Chosen for their
<br /> artistic excellence and communication skills,and then escorted directly to the patients for
<br /> visits running from 5 - 20 minutes,well over 2,100 artists have visited well over 100,000
<br /> hospital denizens. UNC Hospitals has 804 in-patient beds.
<br /> DooR to DooR's excellent performing, (piano, guitar,mandolin,kora,violin, accordion, flute,
<br /> percussion,harp,hammer dulcimer, ukulele,lyre,bass,harmonica and a cappella song)
<br /> literary, (poet, actress, story teller,) and visual artist, (painter,water colorist,
<br /> photographer, caricaturist, cartoonist, origami and collage maker,) bring their arts into the
<br /> patients' rooms, as well as Dialysis,the Burn Center,staff rooms, Oncology, Bone Marrow
<br /> and Chemotherapy Clinics, Surgery, Emergency, Pediatric Waiting Areas and lobbies,which
<br /> become mini-theaters and classrooms. Those visits evoke words like these from patients,
<br /> staff and our artists:

<br /> "I think door to door is a wonderful program. I've been in the burn unit for two weeks now
<br /> without a single visitor,but having Joy and Teresa come to see me lifted my spirits so so so
<br /> so much!!!!! Thank you! Burn Unit, Patient Room
<br /> "She made my day! Awesome!! It's good therapy for me! (My hands don't work very
<br /> well.)"
<br /> Staff:
<br /> "What a joy to have this group here today! They provided a lighthearted delightful

<br /> A pharmacologist passing by said to me: "The music changed my day, lightened my mood.
<br /> Thankyou for all you do!"
<br /> "Would like for someone to come to our clinic to share the music with our patients! They
<br /> love the music. Would like someone to come Monday(anytime) and Tuesday (anytime)
<br /> and Thursday (afternoon) Anytime we can have someone! "RN
<br /> Artists:
<br /> "The door to door program is the most rewarding work I have ever done as a performer.
<br /> Singing in the cancer patient's room is bringing a direct message of joy,beauty and
<br /> humanity to someone who desperately needs it,perhaps more than anyone in the world.
<br /> The results are almost always immediate and life changing. "
