A passage from a favorite novel, a letter from one beloved, a feather found on a walk that changed one's life, a special shell from a joyful holiday, a quote from an inspiring figure, a festive shirt woven with cultural patterns--these objects, words,'and patterns function like keyholes through which we catch a glimpse of a wider experience we want to remember, to hold on to--a memory that will continue to shape us on our journey even when the original moment is long past. The physical presence of the object, the words on the page, holding the stone from the Grand Canyon in one's hand--creates a kinetic connection with lived experience. We all carry with us a cultural legacy manifest in part in the tokens we treasure. Inspired by the work of Italian artist Siglinda Scarpa, this project is designed to create a process of artistic empowerment for the children of many cultures at Scroggs Elementary School. The project will culminate in the completion of a tile- and object-embedded mural installed on the wall of the school. The mural will consist of tiles etched with cultural patterns, quotes, and embedded objects from the families of the student body, at once unifying the local school culture and celebrating the diversity of the families who attend. y y, r 'f j l a Details from Siglinda Scarpa's Fireplaces, Chatham Community Library, 2010. Pittsboro, North Carolina. For this project I will reach out to the community on a number of levels. First, I will create an after school art club for interested students, with pro-rated tuition (to secure matching funds) and scholarship seats to be inclusive of as diverse a population as possible. The sole purpose of the club will be to create this project, start to finish.
