Hillsborough Sculpture Tour 2015, and will be a spectacular work of art which will bring notice
and tourists to Hillsborough, enhance our town's appearance and reputation, and involve the
community in the exciting experience of helping build the sculpture. Prior to designing and
building the sculpture, Dougherty makes site visits, taking suggestions, listening to concerns,
selecting the site, and developing sketches for the construction. The Arts Council will work with
him and the community to develop enthusiasm for the project and teams to participate in the
construction. The sculpture will be appropriate for Hillsborough, as it will be made of local
saplings, and designed to enhance its site. Dougherty's sculptures usually last at least two
years, but are not permanent, so eventually the site will return to its natural state. We had a
kickoff event at the grand opening of Riverwalk to start fundraising and build enthusiasm and
support. An educational component for schools is already developed (see attachment#3
Stickwork for All). A professional photographer will document the installation, and we will have
an exhibit celebration at completion of the installation. We have received a Tourism Board grant
of$8,000 so we have solid funding foundation, and we are asking Orange County Arts
Commission to grant us $1,500 to help us achieve the $23,000 needed to achieve this project.
Our past Hillsborough Sculpture Tours have attracted over 8,000 viewers. Because the
Dougherty Stickwork Hillsborough project is expected to be constructed along Hillsborough's
new Riverwalk, and because it will involve the community in its construction, we expect that
number to double. Based on area demographics, we estimate viewers and participants to be
approximately 14%African American, 1% Native American, 75% Caucasian, and 20% Children.
