Students from UNC's Music Department perform arias and ensembles,
with narration by Stafford Wing.
• December 7,2014: A classical concert featuring Gershwin's"American in Paris",
Ravel's"Pavane pour une infante defeunte",and Mendelssohn's"Italian Symphony".
• February 1:Auditions for 2015 Young Artist Competition. Winner performs in
concert with the orchestra on May 3. Runners-up read their repertoire with the
orchestra in rehearsal on March 26.
• February 15,2015: A classical concert with guest soloists Jennifer Curtis (violin)and
Thomas Otten(piano). Works include Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony",Mozart's
"Piano Concerto#20", and Vaughan-Williams"The Lark Ascending".
• March 20,2015:A special concert dedicated to the memory of Dr.Robert Millikan.
The featured work will be the world premiere of a symphony by composer Ann
Millikan.
• May 3,2015: A classical concert featuring Tchaikovsky's"Pathetique Symphony"
and the winner of the 2015 Young Artist Competition.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
The CHP would like to use grant funds to support its third concert program this year,
featuring professional soloists Jennifer Curtis and Thomas Otten. Professional musicians
typically fill many different roles in their careers—from ensemble member to recitalist to
chamber player to teacher. Perhaps the rarest opportunity musicians have is the chance to
play in collaboration with a full symphony orchestra. This concert offers such an opportunity
for these two superb soloists, both of whom have performed in major music centers in the
United States and abroad. Working with the soloists is also a source of inspiration for the
CHP,who always seeks to perform at a high level for their distinguished guests. It is a
special treat to work with Jennifer Curtis, a Chapel Hill native, who first played with the
orchestra as a student soloist in 1992.
Scheduled for February 15, 2015 in Hill Hall Auditorium, this program is similar to
work the CHP has done with other professional soloists(outlined above in the Organizational
Profile). Based on similar concerts, the CHP anticipates an audience of around 350 people,
mostly from the Triangle area. Largely because the group's concerts are free, CHP audiences
tend to be more diverse in age, ethnicity, and income level than most classical music
audiences.
Grant funds have been requested to help pay the salary of the music director, rental
costs for the use of Hill Hall, and a fee for guest artist Jennifer Curtis. Remaining expenses
for the concert(not covered by the grant request) include music rental costs, program printing
costs, salaries of technical staff, reception costs, and costs of our archival recording.
