We will provide a public reception and gallery tour that includes a high
functioning young adult on the Autism spectrum with a local neuro typical musician. As a
professional artist, I will address collaboration, experimentation, and innovative display of mixed
media. These co-programming partnerships with members of the Autism and developmental
disabilities community are designed to promote understanding and inclusion. I hope to do my
part to direct additional resources towards future opportunities, using photography and the
creative arts. I hope through my contributions,I may play a role in building community
connections as an artist practitioner, educator, and a public arts advocate.
Background and Artist Experience
As a practicing artist and cultural worker,my goals are to create a highly skilled and
collaborative community comprised of mature and thoughtful professionals who will share their
work and ideas together through public exhibitions, lectures, seminars, and retreats. As a
professional artist, it is imperative that I engage with others in my field, maintaining a support
group for clarity of vision and skill development. As I continue to grow and evolve as a mature
artist,I have begun to integrate my original career as an educational therapist where I worked
with children and families with developmental disabilities. As a public arts advocate I have
begun to find fulfillment in working with a wider and more inclusive spectrum of participants,
including emerging and atypical artists, while continuing my work with seasoned pros.
While a college level teacher at the University of Maryland,I taught black and white
darkroom, critical theory, and photographic printmaking. During the digital revolution we
integrated instruction through the art, education, and the computer science departments. I have
been an exhibiting artist starting with traditional silver photography and now emerging into
professional collaborations with video artist, printmakers, fiber artists, graphic pencil artists,
paper collage artists,jewelers,woodcrafters, and poets.
Several years ago I produced an exhibition with a group of professional artists to
construct collaborative multilayered portraits that combined my photographic imagery and their
paintings. I have exhibited and provided educational forums consistently over the years with a
series of talks for the Orange County arts community about technique and process.
Concurrent with the collaborative portrait I am creating with Susan,I will also be
working on a personal exhibition with 4 mature professional women artists in Orange County
who use fabric, handmade paper, sculpture, and painting. We are meeting weekly, attending
exhibitions, researching materials, and discussing our collaborative efforts as a team of mature
artists, working in different mediums, producing a cohesive body of work between 5 artists.
With advanced degrees in both Special Education and Imaging and Digital Arts,I deeply
value this type of community work. Partnerships with the,the North Carolina Council on
Developmental Disabilities, and the Adapted Recreation&Inclusion Program of the Town of
Chapel Hill have enabled my work to be installed in permanent public facilities and displayed at
various galleries and educational venues.
