DocuSign Envelope ID:4CB7473F-4B13-4A9C-A9FF-64745B8579B8
1
4.Narrative Tyroler
I am submitting this proposal for the 2014-2015 fall grant season for artist fees,
materials, and supplies to support an exhibition and public community forum with an emerging
artist diagnosed with high functioning Autism. In collaboration with a self-advocacy leadership
program for adults with neurodevelopmental and related disorders,we will produce a
collaborative portrait with text and multimedia collage. I will mentor her to produce a cohesive
body of her own personal artwork exhibited in conjunction with activities designed to encourage
understanding and inclusivity of Autism through creative expression in the arts.
Background and Context of Project
Last year I received a very generous arts commission to support a photographic project,
Rockin the Spectrum at the Homestead aquatic center, photographing children with Autism
Spectrum Disorder as they were learning to swim. Over the past year I have continued to
photograph this group and to provide workshops, seminars, and exhibitions emphasizing art,
advocacy, and creativity, providing gift portraits for the families and volunteer trainers that
document the children's challenges and successes in the water.
While working with my previous grant funded projects I formed a special partnership
with Deborah Zuver, a therapist and researcher and director of Project STIR(Steps Toward
Independence and Responsibility). Susan Kennon is one of Deborah's student trainees in the
LEND program, (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disorders). Susan is
an emerging artist recently diagnosed with High Functioning Autism. Deborah and I have
decided to showcase Susan's artwork in her first gallery exhibition. She will participate in a
public forum and discuss her creative process for Autism Awareness activities in Spring 2015
coinciding with arts outreach programs at the FRANK gallery and in the broader Orange County
Autism community. Together, Susan and I will produce a multi-media collaborative portrait
exploring issues of identity and self-representation.
Project Proposal Details
I am mentoring Susan Kennon, an emerging artist with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the
production of her first professional exhibition for the Orange County Autism Awareness
celebrations in April 2015. I am organizing a public forum April 23 where she will discuss her
creative process together with other professionals, parents, and high functioning adult artists with
ASD. I am producing a series of photographic portraits of Susan that she will then use as source
material to articulate her responses through text and mixed media. Depending on her confidence
and our progress, this work will be exhibited along with her other paintings in her first upcoming
art exhibition. We may continue to produce art for future presentations, however,we will stress
the art-making process and explore issues relating to portraiture, self-representation, and
technique rather than focus on a finished or polished product. I will be requesting funding's for
art and photo supplies for the exhibition and for artist fees associated with these activities.
