This grant will support the costs of presenting education concerts with the full-orchestra in Spring 2015 to elementary students from the Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. 1. Organizational Profile Founded in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, 65-member orchestra with a mission to be North Carolina's state orchestra, an orchestra achieving the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards while embracing its dual legacies of statewide service and music education. Under the leadership of music director Grant Llewellyn the orchestra has continued to increase both its artistic stature and service to the community.Traveling approximately 18,000 miles each season across the state, the Symphony reaches 250,000 people per year from more than 30 counties, including over 50,000 school children. The orchestra also has an extensive music education program which is integrated into the arts education curriculum of the North Carolina public schools. The North Carolina Symphony allocates more of its resources to statewide service and music education than any other American orchestra. 2. Current Programs and Services Evening and Community Concerts—The Symphony's season is comprised of diverse series and performances including its classical music series, pops series, pub series, a series of concerts designed specifically for young people and families, and an outdoor summer concert series. In addition to performing in Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall,the orchestra's home venue,the Symphony offers subscription series in the following communities across the state: Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, New Bern, Southern Pines, and Wilmington. In Chapel Hill the Symphony performs nine classical concerts annually reaching an audience of over 10,000 patrons and an annual outdoor summer concert in Southern Village reaching over 2,500. Education—Education concerts performed by the full-orchestra have been a central part of the North Carolina Symphony's mission since the program began over 70 years ago.The concerts are designed to introduce young people to orchestral music in a fun and engaging way and supplement the arts education curriculum in the schools. The Symphony presents numerous other educational opportunities, including professional development workshops for teachers, a pre-concert lecture series (also presented before each classical concert in Chapel Hill), master classes with guest artists, a youth concerto competition, and free private music lessons for economically disadvantaged students.The North Carolina Symphony recognizes the profound impact music has on people's lives and believes its education programs provide a critical service to our community. 1
