For many children, this is their first time seeing a live
performance as well as working with a professional artist. By participating in alternative
methods of learning, all students are able to reach their maximum potential because
they are able to learn through the approach that fits their individual learning styles.
The Teaching Artist for the New Hope Elementary 5th Grade Artist Residency is Virginia
Danford. Virginia has been a professional artist and educator for over 20 years. She
holds an MFA in Acting and also works as a choreographer and director in addition to
teaching. She teaches a variety of courses for all ages including drama, acting on
camera, dance and movement classes, and poetry, among others. She has taught
professional classes at colleges, universities, public and private institutions, as well as
working as a teaching artist in the schools for over 15 years. Virginia has worked with
The ArtsCenter since the inception of the Artist Residency (formerly ABLE residencies)
program and continues to develop innovative programs that are educational and
inspirational to classroom teachers and students alike.
During this Artist Residency, the New Hope Elementary 5th grade classes will attend
Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart, a one -man play developed and performance by local
artist Mike Wiley. The students will explore the themes of racism, courage,
determination, hope and non - violence through theatre and creative movement activities
designed to enhance creative expression, performance skills, self- esteem and
cooperation. On the final day, students will have an open class sharing a culmination of
their work.
Virginia and The ArtsCenter's School & Family Programs Coordinator have already met
with classroom teachers from New Hope's 5th grade for a planning session to review goals
and discuss residency logistics. Following the residency, they will all meet again for an
evaluation meeting. In addition to this evaluation tool, The ArtsCenter will distribute
student and teacher evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the experience, as well as
communicate regularly with teachers and administrators during and following residencies.
Additionally, curriculum assessments are administered following all residencies to
measure academic growth on the material covered during residencies. The assessments
are created with collaboration from classroom teachers, teaching artists and The
ArtsCenter's School & Family Programs Coordinator. The ArtsCenter is currently
reviewing the evaluation process to assure its effectiveness and standardize processes
across the board.
The ArtsCenter has successfully implemented 51 residencies in area schools over the
last several years through the Arts in Education program, 37 of which have been Artist
Residencies (formerly ABLE residencies). Furthermore, as mentioned above, The
ArtsCenter has successfully carried out the focus school program at Central Elementary
for the past five years and has expanded this program to New Hope and Efland- Cheeks
Elementary Schools.
The ArtsCenter requests funding in the amount of $1500 to be applied towards artist
fees and supplies for the New Hope Elementary School 5th grade Artist Residency, to
take place in January 2015.
