a
66
1 COORDINATING WITH HILLSBOROUGH ON THE DESIGN AND FUNDING OF A TOWN/COUNTY
2 RIVERFRONT PARR ALONG THE ENO
3 Chair Carey requested feedback about whether there was interest in
4 creating, through a joint venture, a riverfront park on the Eno.
5
6 Eric Swanson said that someone had indicated to him that the Chamber
7 of Commerce -might have an interest in participating in such a project.
8 They may have already raised some money to be used for a project in this
9 area.
10
11 Commissioner Crowther indicated that Hillsborough has a newly adopted
12 Parks and Recreation Plan and the County has a similar plan. He said that
13 both of these plans mention this site as a possible location for a park.
14
15 Mayor Johnson said N.C. State University students completed a plan
16 which included a park and gazebo on the river. He hoped that the County
17 and Town would be able to work jointly on this plan. He suggested using
18 inmate labor to prepare the land. Those plans will be located and
19 distributed.
20
21 Chair Carey suggested putting a group together which would include,
22 among others, citizens from the Chamber and both Recreation and Parks
23 Advisory Councils.
24
25 Commissioner Willhoit agreed that this was important, but he asked
26 that the proposal to look at future school sites not be fogotten. He
27 raised caution about the prospects of County money being spent for a Town
28 park during the current financial climate. However, the County could
29 possibly provide the land, the public sector could raise the money and the
30 Town provide the labor.
31
32 Chair Carey asked that the Managers contact the Chamber and explore
33 the possibilities for this land.
34
35
36
37 LANDFILL SITE:
38 In response to a request, Commissioner Willhoit indicated that the
39 Landfill Search Committee is gathering data and is expected to make its
40 report in the fall. After the report is finalized, the elected officials
41 for each of the towns and the County will consider the recommendation.
42
43 HILLSBOROUGH'S RESERVOIR:
44 Eric Swanson reported that the financing has been approved in the
45 amount of $5.8 million in General Obligation Bonds. The first step have
46 been taken in approving the surveying work. They anticipate purchasing
47 land in the summer.
48
49 There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. The next
5o regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners is March 21, 1995 at 7:30
51 P.M. That meeting will be held in the Community Meeting Room, Orange
52 Water and Sewer Authority, Carrboro, NC.
53
54 Moses Carey, Jr. , Chair
55
