1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No.
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 26, 1995
SUBJECT: Contract between the UNC School of Dentistry and the OCHD for
the Smart Start Project
DEPARTMENT: HEALTH PUBLIC HEARING: Yes X No
ATTACHMENT(S) : INFORMATION CONTACT:
HEALTH DIRECTOR'S OFFICE X2411
1. 3 page agreement.
TELEPHONE NUMBER:
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-4501
Mebane - 227-2031
Durham - 688-7331
PURPOSE:
To approve a contract between the UNC School of Dentistry and the Orange
County Health Department for the coordination of a dental screening
program for 0 to 5 year old children funded by Smart Start.
Approximately 1,500 children will be screened in 75 day care centers and
family day care homes.
BACKGROUND:
On March 21, 1995, the Board of Commissioners accepted a grant award from
the Local Smart Start Board, the Orange County Partnership for Young
Children, funded by an amendment to the contract between the Department
of Human Resources and the Health Department. On April 3, 1995, the
Board of Commissioners approved the grant project ordinance to fund the
dental screening project.
This project repeats the highly successful, initial screening project
conducted in 1994. The enclosed contract is virtually the same as the
previous year. The contract enables the Health Department to subcontract
the major portion of the screening project and avoid having to establish
a temporary position within the Health Department budget. It also
enables a closer coordination among the Health Department, the School of
Dentistry and the dental and hygiene students, who will actually carry
out the work.
No county funds are required. The contract is fully funded by the Smart
Start Project grant and the work will be completed by June 30, 1995.
RECOMMENDATIONS) The Manager recommends approval of the contract.
