ATTACHMENT 2 <br /> C5580-5/95 5 <br /> LIBRARY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs difficult professional work and responsible administrative work in overseeing general <br /> library operations, developing programs and supporting the library director; does related work as <br /> required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate <br /> personnel and volunteers. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Supervises daily library operations; Serves as library supervisor over entire staff for general <br /> operations; Supervises volunteer program and English as a Second Language program; <br /> Supervises Library Assistant positions; <br /> Plans, develops, implements, and reviews adult programs; manages program budget and handles <br /> publicity; carries out programs, writes final report, and orders young adult materials; <br /> Assists the director in developing and preparing the annual budget; gathers figures and support <br /> information and writes narrative support; <br /> Participates in the recruitment process by reviewing applications and resumes, contacting <br /> applicants, and interviewing candidates; Trains new employees; <br /> Maintains the library's art gallery; recruits and schedules artists; assists artists with problems <br /> concerning exhibits; promotes art exhibits; <br /> Serves as outreach librarian serving patrons unable to come into the library; selects and delivers <br /> materials; Develops, writes, and co-edits newsletter; Serves as liaison with Friends of the Library; <br /> Composes written documents and correspondence such as grants and contracts; <br /> Works general circulation desk assisting patrons, checking books in and out, and answering <br /> questions; Participates in professional organizations; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> Thorough knowledge of library procedures and operations; thorough knowledge of young adult <br /> and adult library materials; thorough knowledge of budget practices and personnel procedures; <br /> thorough knowledge of library media and materials; thorough knowledge of grant writing <br /> practices; ability to plan, assign, instruct and supervise the work of others; ability to communicate <br /> effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working <br /> relationships with volunteers, employees, library friends and the general public. <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college <br /> or university with a degree in library science and at least three years of professional library <br /> experience, including two years supervisory and administrative experience. <br />
