12
M
201 North Churton Street
'SF-T Hillsborough,NC 27278
www.orangenchistory.org
919.732.2201
Brii)ghig Orange Couiiol
Htstoiy People Together
Dear Board Members,
On behalf of the Historical Foundation of Hillsborough and Orange County, which
operates the Orange County Historical Museum,I am filing a late application for exemption of
business personal property tax.
In 2013 the Historical Foundation employed th'e services of an accountant to assist with
filing federal, state, and local taxes. In January of 2014 the Treasurer of the Historical
Foundation resigned from the position, requiring another individual from the Finance Committee
to take over the communication with the Executive Director of the Museum and the accountant.
When the initial due date for the business personal property listing was unable to be met by the
accountant, the Executive Director filed for an extension. Once the extension was approved,I(as
Executive Director)contacted the Orange County Tax Office to get a better understanding of
what was required. At the end of the conversation I was unaware that an exemption needed to be
filed with the business personal property forms. It was decided that the accountant would file on
behalf of the organization. The accountant did not indicate that the organization needed to file an
exemption.
I am asking that the Equalization and Review Board please, consider the current
application for exemption with several factors in mind;this is a small organization functioning
with three part-time staff and a volunteer board,an accountant had been hired and paid to file the
business personal property taxes and did not notify the organization of an exemption need, and
that the Historical Foundation was handling an unexpected transition of Treasurer information
and duties.
Thank you for your consideration,
Sincerely,
Brandie Fields
Executive Director
Orange County Historical Museum
Historical Foundation of Hillsborough and Orange County
