ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: October 7, 2014 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 6 -g <br />SUBJECT: Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Proqram Contract Renewal <br />DEPARTMENT: Social Services <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Contract - Regional Partnership Local <br />Workforce Development Area and <br />Orange County Social Services <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Nancy Coston, 245 -2800 <br />Sharron Hinton, 245 -2840 <br />1 <br />PURPOSE: To continue grant funding for operations of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) <br />"Building Futures" Youth Employment and Training Program. <br />BACKGROUND: In June 2013, the Board approved the new grant project and position requests <br />to implement the "Building Futures Program ". The purpose of the grant is to provide academic, <br />occupational and work readiness activities; as well as work experience (paid and unpaid) for <br />eligible Orange County youth. <br />After a successful year of operations, Orange County Social Services has been notified that <br />continuation funds in the amount of $293,892 have been awarded effective July 1, 2014. For <br />FY 2013 -14, staff served 87 participants (referred from the previous contract agency) and <br />enrolled an additional 26 individuals. Services included tuition and fees, books, school supplies, <br />mileage reimbursement for training, work attire & uniforms, and educational support & career <br />readiness activities. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The grant funds are used to support two (2) full -time equivalent (FTE) <br />positions, as well as providing paid work experience for 15 youth participants and various <br />program support activities. In addition, funding for this year will help to support another .5 FTE, <br />and this work is being completed by a former family specialist position that is now reassigned. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board authorize the Manager to <br />sign the contract renewal and any future amendments or renewals. <br />
