He said this includes <br />24 literacy, reading skills, and cultural competencies. He said health literacy is a better predictor of <br />25 health outcomes than age, race or socio economic status. <br />26 Referring to the bar graph slide titled Innovation, Tony Whitaker said the public health <br />27 arena is changing and the department is trying to change with it. He noted that the innovations <br />28 grant program is part of the BOH budget, and said this has yielded tangible results. <br />29 <br />30 Susan Elmore said she is the veterinarian liaison to the Board of Health. She presented <br />31 the following PowerPoint slides: <br />32 <br />33 Communication <br />34 - Using communications to advocate for health needs and effective interventions <br />35 <br />36 Childhood & Family Obesity <br />37 • Catalyze and facilitate obesity prevention partnerships <br />38 • Identify evidence -based interventions to implement county -wide <br />39 • Advocate for policies to reduce obesity through environmental and regulatory changes <br />40 <br />41 Ongoing Projects <br />42 - Lactation Rooms <br />43 - After School Physical Activity <br />44 - NAPSACC (Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care) / Let's Move <br />45 <br />46 Susan Elmore said the BOH has worked with the Sportsplex on a pilot program to <br />47 improve food policies at child centered facilities. She said this collaboration led to a plan for <br />48 improvements, removal of fried food from lunches, and by the end of this month the fryer will be <br />49 removed and replaced with a convection oven. <br />
