• Job fairs help unemployed and underemployed residents of Orange County <br /> locate employment <br /> • Many employers hire on the spot <br /> • Last year more than 40 employers were available to accept applications and <br /> recruit new employees <br /> • Over 600 individuals attended job fairs in 2013 seeking employment <br /> Employment: Building Futures Program (WIA) <br /> • It is a youth development program that offers comprehensive year-round services <br /> to help at-risk youth ages 16-21 become successful at school and in employment <br /> • Activities include: <br /> � Summer employment activities <br /> � Leadership development <br /> � Dropout prevention <br /> � Work experience <br /> � Tuition/educational assistance <br /> Employment: FNS Employment and Training <br /> • A voluntary program for recipients of FNS <br /> • Helps unemployed and underemployed individuals to enhance job seeking skills <br /> and obtain employment <br /> • Implemented in October, 2013 <br /> • Includes job fairs and weekly job clubs <br /> • 26 people have been hired since the program began in October <br /> Sharon Hinton said the Skills Development Center has also been called the Joplin <br /> Center and is in the midst of recertification with the Department of Commerce to remain at a <br /> level 1 status. She said this will be determined by the end of June. <br /> Sharon Hinton said the Building Futures Program inherited about 70 participants, and <br /> has received another 115 new referrals since January. <br /> Robert Gilmore presented the following slide: <br /> Employment: Work First <br /> • Work First is North Carolina's TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) <br /> plan to help families move off of welfare and into jobs. To help families, Work <br /> First provides employment services; supportive services and time limited cash <br /> assistance to families with children under age 18 who meet income and <br /> resources guidelines. <br /> Robert Gilmore said he has been the Human Services Supervisor for the Work First <br /> program for over 14 years. He said the program provides for families in a holistic manner. A <br /> video was shown of a participant in the Work First program. <br /> Nancy Coston said there is another face to the impact of poverty, and these situations <br /> often involve the social work staff with adult and child protective services.
