6 <br /> 1 Todd LoFrese showed the slide on average teacher's salaries and said there is a <br /> 2 $10,000 difference between North Carolina and the national average. He said North Carolina <br /> 3 ranks 46th in the nation for average teacher salaries, and 48th in the nation for beginning teacher <br /> 4 salaries. He said the ability to recruit teachers from out of state has become increasingly <br /> 5 difficult. He said the turnover rate is at its highest rate in 10 years, and in many cases teachers <br /> 6 are moving out of state or leaving the profession. <br /> 7 Todd LoFrese said even with local support, the realities at the state level are making it <br /> 8 difficult for teachers to make ends meet. He asked for the Boards' help with the budget, and he <br /> 9 thanked them for their continued support <br /> 10 <br /> 11 OCS Superintendent Geri Martin thanked the Commissioners for their support and <br /> 12 consideration of the needs of the district. She referred to the Board packet and said there had <br /> 13 been a change in the initial request for per student funding after the latest projections showed <br /> 14 an increase of 197 students instead of the 75 used in the original budget numbers.
