• Last Fridays Art Walks, during which venues unite to celebrate and present art; • Handmade Parade, featuring handmade puppets and has become a valued local tradition; • Parlor Concerts,showcasing traditional music; • Hillsborough Downtown Arts&Crafts Show,an annual spring event with regional artists; • Free Spirit Freedom, celebrating the diversity of Orange County's historic past and future through p otography and narrative; • Orange Dog Poets Society,supporting the strong literary tradition of Hillsborough; • Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop, providing a consistent venue for the work of local ar fists; • Hillsborough Jazz Festival,bringing outdoor jazz performances to Hillsborough annually; • Hillsbor ugh Sculpture Tour,a bi-annual exhibit of outdoor sculpture in Hillsborough; and •Arts Alive,a performance series combining multiple art forms such as music and literature. • Proposed Uses of Grant Funds —description including location, date, artists involved. Free Spirit Freedom is proposing to use OCAC funds to support the expansion of the "Freedom through Faith and Knowledge"gallery of images,as well as the installation of two exhibition and the sponsoring of two storytelling events. More specifically,grant funds are needed to: • 1] contract with Jacquelin Liggins,a local photographer with roots in Orange County, t,) pt otograph [using film] historic school structures and sites that were built in rural Or ange County for children of color,and to have the film developed [$375]; • 2] print and mount thirty-five [35] new photographs/images and twenty [20] histor,. pf otographs and identifying text on sintra,at A Better Image Printing, a local vendor [$5 00]; • 3] contract with Staler Gilfillen a local architect,to document information about the structures and sites in the photographs—i.e., architectural features and their significance [$175]; • 4] purchase materials to install two photography exhibitions with the new photogra l one month each at the Central Orange Senior Center, and at the HAC Gallery [$50]; • 5] provide stipends to six featured Orange County community elders at two storytel1 nh events,three [3] at each event,who will recount their memories and sentiments in at ending or teaching at rural,segregated schools [$300]; and • 6] assist with travel costs [$100] of project participants. Activities that will be part of the overall project and supported with applicant cash, including, in-kind contributions,are: • two [2] artists'openings with receptions,including space rental; • marketing and publicity • oral history interviews with community members based on the photographs,with guidance from Peter Sandbeck,the County's cultural resources coordinator,and Dr. Freddie L. Parker, Professor of History, NCCU, and transcription by the project direct: r of the narratives, for publishing in hardcopy and on the website;
