r <br /> Compass Center for Women and Families <br /> Proposed Uses of Grant Funds: <br /> Compass Center proposes using these funds for either a 5-week or 8-week series of workshop/groups in <br /> the fall of 2014.The exact dates will be determined by facilitator and group participant availability.The <br /> workshops would be held at Compass Center's Wilson St. location in downtown Chapel Hill, NC. <br /> The facilitators of this group are two Compass Center clients,both accomplished writers,who wish to <br /> share what they have learned with other survivors. <br /> Facilitators: <br /> • Pam Baggett is the author/photographer of the garden book iTropicalismo!(Timber Press). Her <br /> articles appear in Horticulture, Fine Gardening, and The American Gardener. Poems appear or <br /> are forthcoming in The Atlanta Review, Crab Orchard Review, The Sow's Ear,the Barefoot Muse <br /> Press anthology Forgetting Home:Poems About Alzheimers,and The Southern Poetry Anthology, <br /> Volume VII:North Carolina. Pam has taught writing workshops at Duke University's Continuing <br /> Studies Program (now the Osher Lifelong Learning Program),the Ackland Art Museum at the <br /> University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,and at numerous public gardens,including Longwood <br /> Gardens in Kennett Square, PA and the 1C Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. <br /> • Leanne Simon is a writer, activist, educator, and domestic violence survivor. She has published <br /> numerous articles and essays in both online and print media. Recently, she received a Certificate <br /> in Documentary Arts from Duke University with her capstone project being a book-length <br /> memoir titled Just Looking Around. In addition to her writing, she uses documentary photo and <br /> video to uplift communities and engage viewers in social justice issues. Some of her work can be <br /> viewed online at leannesimon.com. <br /> Program Director: <br /> • Connie Carringer is an advocate,facilitator, teacher, and musician. She has been the Support <br /> Group Coordinator at Compass Center for Women and Families since 2012.Connie has worked <br /> in the field of domestic violence for over 5 years. She earned her Master's in Counseling and a <br /> Post-Master's Certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy from Appalachian State University in 2010. <br /> She has been using creative arts, including writing, in the service of healing throughout her own <br /> life and professional career. <br /> Organizational Capacity and Feasibility of Program: <br /> This series is similar to the Art of Healing workshops Compass Center has been offering since the fall of <br /> 2012. In that group, clients participate in a variety of art activities including writing, painting,collage, <br /> sculpture, and mixed-media.There is a disk included in this application with sample work created in <br /> these workshops. It is important to note that the goal of these workshops is in using the creative process <br /> in the service of healing as opposed to producing finished pieces of art. <br /> The series has seen a diverse group of women attend.
