1
Pam Baggett
8800 Wilkerson Road
Cedar Grove NC 27231
919-537-2164
nightair@mindspring.com
Hunger
For years she saw the moon
as a dish of mashed potatoes,
clouds as the cream she scooped
from steaming milk. When geese
honked across a clear October sky,
she saw the slide of fatted birds
across his carving board.
Those years flew faster
than a flock of sixty geese.
Her egg timer hasn't dropped
a grain of sand in the two years
since he died. Yet she can't
remember how to make
her famous airy cakes.
Asked the recipe for butter frosting
she shakes her head, muttering
about stars. She's forgotten
everything except the moon,
which she peels and peels,
hoping he will grow hungry
and come home.
"Hunger" originally appeared in The Sow's Ear, Vol. XXII, No. 4 (Winter 2013). It was
included in the Barefoot Muse Press anthology Forgetting Home: Poems About
Alzheimer's and will appear in The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume VII:North
Carolina in late 2014.
