Arts in Education Grant-Spring 2014-15 McDougle Elementary School PTA <br /> Orchid Ensemble <br /> Audience: 3, 4, 5 (-250 students representing MES diversity) <br /> Show length: 50 minutes <br /> Show date: October 6 or 7, 2014 <br /> Study Areas: Social Studies, Music <br /> Established in 1997, the JUNO nominated Orchid Ensemble is Lan Tung (Taiwan/Canada) on <br /> the erhu/Chinese violin, Yu-Chen Wang (Taiwan/US) on the zheng/Chinese zither, and <br /> Jonathan Bernard (Canada) on percussion. The ensemble blends ancient musical instruments <br /> and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound. The ensemble has <br /> embraced a variety of musical styles to its repertoire, ranging from the traditional and <br /> contemporary music of China, World Music, New Music to Jazz and Creative Improvisation. -The <br /> energetic yet endearing performance style of the ensemble consistently intrigues and delights <br /> its audiences. The presentation acts as a vehicle for greater understanding of Asian culture. <br /> Student participatory activities encourage them to explore different cultures at an early age. <br /> Acclaimed as `One of the brightest blossoms on the world music scene' (Georgia Straight), the <br /> Orchid Ensemble has been tirelessly developing an innovative musical genre based on the <br /> cultural exchange between Western and Asian musicians. <br /> Category NC Essential Standards/Common Core Standards Addressed <br /> 3.C.1 Understand how diverse cultures are visible in local and regional communities <br /> Social 4.C.1 Understand the impact of various cultural groups on North Carolina. <br /> Studies 5.C.1 Understand how increased diversity resulted from migration, settlement patterns <br /> and economic development in the United States. <br /> K-5.MR.1 Understand the interacting elements to respond to music and music <br /> Music performances <br /> K-5 CR.1 Understand global, interdisciplinary, and 21st century connections with music <br /> North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble <br /> Audience: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (•- 500 students representing MES diversity) <br /> Show length: 50 minutes <br /> Show date: November 21, 2014 <br /> Study Areas: Dance, Music <br /> North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble (NCYTE) is one of the leading youth tap ensembles in the <br /> world. They tour the world sharing their unique mix of cutting edged contemporary <br /> choreography and traditional rhythm tap spiced with singing, pencil drumming, beat boxing, <br /> body percussion and even Taiko drumming. <br /> They offer a non-stop percussive dance review peppered with stories, history, and facts about <br /> the forms presented. The performance includes pieces ranging historically and geographically <br /> from traditional rhythm tap, South African Gumboot, French Canadian Waltz Clog, Irish Step <br /> Dance, a Tribute to Vaudeville throwing in a few unique twists from NCYTE including song, <br /> body percussion, pencil drumming and even Taiko drumming!
