Arts in Education Grant—Spring 2014-15 McDougle Elementary School PTA <br /> L3n Tungerhu&WiCC <br /> Crossing between many genres,Lan has performed with Huun Huur Tu(Tuva),Bake Beyond(UK), <br /> and Hossam Shaker(Egypt).She is a member of Tandava(India),Mozaico Flamenco,Dance Theatre, <br /> and Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra.She has studied with improvisortviolinist Mary Oliver in <br /> Amsterdam,with erhu virtuosi Jiebing Chen in San Francisco and Zhang Funming in Beijing, <br /> with Hindustani violinist Kala Ramnath in Bombay and Egyptian violinist Dr.Alfred Gamil in Cairo. <br /> Lan has premiered numerous works by Canadian composers.The various influences are evident <br /> in Lan's compositions and improvisation.Lan is also active as a concert producer and arts <br /> administrator,serving as the vice president of the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra. <br /> Erhu <br /> Introduced to China around 1000 years ago,the erhu is a two-string <br /> stick fiddle that is played while held on the lap.The strings are tuned <br /> to a fifth,with the bow placed between them.The erhu has no finger <br /> board and is usually made of sandalwood or red wood,with a snake <br /> skin resonator.The folk versions use various materials in different <br /> sizes.A popular instrument in solo and ensemble music,the erhu's <br /> Yu- e W <br /> k n an h A <br /> Yu-Chen graduated from Taiwan's Tainan National University of the Arts,where she studied both the <br /> zheng and composition.Performing with precision and astoning technique,she has premiered numerous <br /> works and was a soloist with the National Chinese Orchestra,the Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra,and <br /> the Lift Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra.She has toured in Germany and the US,with Compost 0 <br /> and chamber ensembles such as Kansas City's newEar UMKC Must Nova.Yu-Chen has won numerous <br /> awards:the Gold Prize at the'Golden Lotus'International Youth Music Competn in Macau,a three-time <br /> First Prize winner at the Taiwan National Music Competition,First Prize at the Chinese Musical Instrument <br /> Association's Competition,and the winter of the Taiwan Young Concert Artist Competition. <br /> Zheng <br /> The zheng's popularity can be traced back 2500 years in China.It is a plucked,haff-tube <br /> wood zither with movable bridges,over which a number of strings are stretched.In the <br /> Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD),the zheng was introduced to Japan and Korea,where the <br /> ancient forms of the zheng had been preserved.The modern zheng usually has 21 strings <br /> made of steel wound with nylon.The zheng is <br /> traditionaly tuned to a pentatonic scale. <br /> Modem tuning has many variations. <br /> Jonatkan E)ernardl rcussian <br /> Jonathan performs in a wide range of genres from Orchestral,to New Music and World Music, <br /> The principal percussionist with the Vancouver Island Symphony,he performs with the Vancouver, <br /> Victoria.Vancouver Opera,CBC Radio and Vancouver Intercultual Orchestras.With Ensemble <br /> Symposium,Fringe Group,4 Gallon Drum and Vancouver New Music,Jonathan has premiered <br /> over 60 chamber works-Jonathan has performed Javanese and Balinese music and won awards <br /> from the Canada Council and BC Arts Council to study traditional percussion styles in India,China <br /> and Egypt.He has toured throughout North America,Europe and Japan. <br /> Marimba <br /> The marimba is a wooden,mallet keyboard,percussion instrument <br /> with a chromatic tuning system. Having roots in Africa,the marimba <br /> now an orchestral instrument that is also played solo and within a <br /> variety of ensembles throughout the Americas„Europe and Asia. <br /> Other percussion instruments used are dumbek,frame drum,woodblock shakers <br /> sbells. <br /> Chinese opera gongs and cymbals,crotales,Indian,Tibetan and Turkish <br /> Page 17 of 23 <br />
