Page 14
Creative Woodturning would broaden the CTE and FCM offerings by introducing
students to the expanding world of turned functional and artistic objects, a world that
combines traditional lathe turning techniques with modern materials, equipment, and
principles of design that bridge the realms of craft and art. (For examples, please see
photos included with this proposal.)
A Creative Woodturning program will complement the CRHS curriculum goal by:
--introducing students to basic principles of form and design, to characteristics of
a variety of materials including local and exotic hardwoods, and to motifs
adapted from painting, sculpture, and textiles ("knowledge").
--introducing students to the use and maintenance of woodturning equipment,
tools and materials, to the application of finishing products, and to the
incorporation of veneers, laser engraving, acrylic and oil paints, and inlays
("skills").
--encouraging students to (1) apply critical thinking to the challenges that often
arise when working with hardwoods whose personalities and characteristics can
be exciting but unpredictable, and (2) be willing to engage in critique sessions in
a cooperative and constructive team-like fashion with fellow students
("dispositions").
Finally, CRHS is well-positioned to move forward with a program in Creative
Woodturning because it has the modern equipment to explore the future of
woodturning possibilities, combining creativity, craftsmanship and technology. This
equipment includes a full-size panel saw, a Computer Numeric Control router, and a 36
x 24" laser engraver.
Profile of Chapel Hill Woodturners: Chapel Hill Woodturners (CHW) is a group of 30
individuals whose collective purpose is to promote the craft and art of creative
woodturning. The CHW workshop is located in Carrboro, NC, where members assemble
to exchange concepts and techniques that transform natural wood into objects of
practical use and esthetic beauty. CHW's workshop has a gallery of turned artifacts, a
library of publications and woodturning instruction manuals, 12 lathes, and a range of
machinery, tools, and materials that are available to members. These resources are also
available at no charge on a weekly basis to non-members from the local community
wishing to learn the craft of turning or improve their turning skills.
CHW is committed to outreach and public service. The group's record includes material
and personnel support of non-profit organizations like Historic Stagville Plantation and
NC State Capitol (both NC Department of Cultural Resources), Urban Ministries of
Durham,Josh's Hope Foundation (counselling and mental health), Chapel Hill Public
Library, and UNC Children's Hospital (cancer treatment).
