Arts Program Application Narrative
School Profile: Cedar Ridge High School (CRHS) is one of five public high schools that
serve the students of Orange County, NC. Its 2012-13 enrollment of 1,104 students iri
four grade levels (9-12) represents an ethnic makeup that is 69.9% Caucasian, 16.594.
African-American, 11% Hispanic, 2.3% Multi-racial, 0.2%Asian, and 0.1%American
Indian. As stated in its school profile, "The goal of Cedar Ridge High School is that all
students will graduate College and Career ready through rigorous, relevant academic
curriculum that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to
succeed in both post-secondary education and 211t century careers as active and
engaged citizens . . . ."To that end, CRHS offers an array of programs that provide
"adaptive, differentiated approaches to students with specific academic needs and
goals" (http://www.orange.kl2.nc.us/crhs/about/docs/crhs profile.pdf). One of the
school's most measurably successful of these programs in terms of student awards and
national recognition is Furniture and Cabinetmaking (FCM).
Furniture and Cabinet Making Profile: FCM is housed within the CRHS Career and
Technical Education Curriculum. It is noteworthy for a variety of reasons that include (1)
a male and female cohort representing every level of student ability and (2) a record of
student achievement that positions it at the top of similar high school and college
programs in the United States.Tangible evidence of this achievement is the number of
students who have gone on to enroll in design programs at two-and four-year
institutions, including Rockingham Community College, East Carolina University, NC
State University, Appalachian State University and Rhode Island School of Design. Ir
addition, CRHS is the only school that has won top prizes in every Association of
Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers' (AWFS) biennial international student
competition since 1999. (Best of Show: 1; People's Choice: 2; 111 place: 20; 2"d place 1;
Honorable Mention: 7) CRHS students have also won many awards at other nationz0
competitions, such as Skills USA, taking all top spots (3) in 2014. In recognition of its
remarkable accomplishments, Laguna Tools, Inc. presented the FCM program in 2005
with a prize package of machinery worth $30,000.
Proposed Use of Grant Funds: CRHS would like to partner with a community group---the
Chapel Hill Woodturners—to add a Creative Woodturning component to its Furniture
and Cabinet Making Curriculum. To do so effectively, FCM needs to acquire four lathe-
to have a critical mass of equipment to replace the antiquated ones we have now.
