C
Page 12 ,
Instructional supplies:The budget for instructional supplies varies from year to year and
comes from multiple sources. The CTE office provides funding for the major lumber
purchases on an annual basis. The requests are submitted twice a year, based on
inventory and needs, and are funded by discretion of CTE in light of available funds and
the total amount of requests from the various CTE programs. We also advocate among
business and industry for donations of materials and have been fortunate to receive
donations over the past many years.
Consumable supplies:The consumable supplies budget is funded from a $25 lab fee
charged to each student enrolled in the program. We also produce products for sale and
maintain a relationship with the Hillsborough Arts Council to sell our products in their
showroom located in downtown Hillsborough. We maintain a point of sale display in the
front lobby of CRHS and have student-operated sales during CRHS Open House and
Parent/Teacher conferences.
Staff:The instructional staff(Keith Yow, sole teacher) of the Furniture and
Cabinetmaking Program is compensated from the Career and Technical Education (CTE)
budget of the Orange County School system. The funds are provided from the Carl D.
Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act.
Please note: Ms. Patricia Harris, Director for College and Career Readiness, Orange
County Schools, has offered to provide more specific budget information, if requested.
(Please see her email of May 13, 2014, included with this proposal.)
Summary Statement for Proposed Use of Arts in Education Grant:
We are applying for an Orange County Arts in Education Grant to acquire needed
equipment (lathes) for a Creative Woodturning program that would expand the reach
and scope of educational opportunities for students in Cedar Ridge High School's well-
established and prize-winning Furniture and Cabinetmaking Program. The equipment
will become the property of Cedar Ridge High School.
4. Budget
Since this project will be housed within existing Cedar Ridge High School facilities, we
are not requesting funds for space rental. Instruction will be provided by Keith Yow, a
Cedar Ridge staff instructor, as a component of his regular teaching responsibilities. In
addition, Chapel Hill Woodturners will provide$500 cash and in-kind support of
materials, classes, and workshops by selected club members. The Cedar Ridge program
already has six lathes and enough tooling to offer a Creative Woodturning program
annually for 10-12 students (5-6 each term). But three of the lathes are difficult to
operate and are very old. These need to be replaced. With safe and more manageable
equipment, we expect to attract more female students to the woodturning program.
