P a g i5
CHW now wishes to broaden its community outreach and education mission by offering
a Creative Woodturning component to the Career and Technical Education/Furniture
and Cabinetmaking curriculum at Cedar Ridge High School. CHW's support for this
partnership includes: (1) a $500 cash contribution as partial matching funds for this
$1,000 grant request; (2) assistance in developing a lesson plan that will be integrated
into the CRHS CTE curriculum; (3) miscellaneous non-cash donations of tools and
materials; and (4) a schedule of instructional classes and workshops by selected CHW
members designed to introduce students to basic woodturning principles. These
sessions will also include more advanced instruction in the application of a variety of
creative enhancements such as marbling with acrylic and oil paints, texturing and
spiraling techniques, and elements of marquetry and textile design.
CHW members who will instruct in Creative Woodturning are trained professionals
and/or experienced educators. Five members regularly teach at the John C. Campbell
Folk School in Brasstown, NC. CHW routinely provides training/workshops for members
of other clubs in the area and throughout North Carolina. Several members have their
works exhibited and sold through a variety of art galleries and shows.
