Bright Star's production delved into the childhoods of these two
remarkable figures and recreated key moments and events that shaped bcth of their
lives. The show celebrated the many contributions of these two heroic Ame,icans.
During 2012-2013, the following performers visited Estes Hills Elementary School:
Bright Star performed for our K-2nd grade students, bringing the stories of Johnrly
Appleseed, Daniel Boone, and Paul Bunyan to life by combining traditional American
Tall Tales with toe-tapping, old fashioned, southern style bluegrass music for an
upbeat production that had our students fully engaged.
Hobey Ford performed his "Migration" story twice, once for our K-2nd grades and
once for our 3rd-5th grades. In his original story, Mr. Ford told about a Mexican girl
named Beatriz ("traveler") and her family's migration from their home near Mexico
City to the United States using realistic puppets that served to bring his story to life.
Donna Washington —A vibrant, dynamic storyteller, Ms. Washington perfcrmed one
show for our 3rd-5th graders using her incredible vocal pyrotechnics, dramatic facial
expressions, and energetic physicality to make her stories come to life while at the
same time conveying life lessons through her narratives.
Jabali African Acrobats —The Jabali African Acrobats from Mombasa, Kenya
performed two shows at our school, one for our K-2nd grades and one for our 3`d-5th
grades. Making use of acrobatics, contortions, tumbling, human pyramids, chair
balancing skills, and dance, they amazed our students and kept them on the edge of
their seats, while exemplifying the link between athletics and the arts.
During the 2011-12 school year, our students enjoyed the following performances:
Transactors Improv performed a "Back To School" themed improvisational show for
our 3rd-5th grades. The oldest active improvisational group in the South, Transactors
Improv focused on emotion, physicality, character, commitment, teamwork, and fun.
Doug Berky used storytelling styles from diverse cultures in his presentations at OLAr
school. Mr. Berky made use of masks, mime, inventive costumes, and puppetry to
introduce our students to a collection of wisdom stories from around the world.
David Gonzalez presented "Cuentos —Tales from the Latino World," creating a vivid
and captivating picture of the people and rich cultures of the Spanish-speaking world
with colorful tales from the Caribbean, South America, and the Bronx.
Farmer Jason presented a concert of sing-alongs and good-time songs for OLAr
students. In his performances, Farmer Jason transformed family music, pulling from
his own musical journey that pioneers the fusion of punk rock and country.
Estes Hills Elementary School, Page 2 o* 3
