"Turtle Island Tales" UNIMA Citation of Excellence 2nd-6th grade and Family Turtle Island Tales is a performance of songs and stories of Native Americans told r.hrough puppet This production was funded by the Jim Henson Foundation and utilizes shadow puppetry and a Iii ;i i.cd realistic Native American singer puppet. The shadow puppetry is performed before beautiful painted scenes. The production features three tales:"Raven Steals the Sun"(Haida),"The Gift of Fire" wdapted from Semu Haute,a Chumash elder),"Antelope Carrier and the Thunderbirds"(Arikara). T li i rr;,er char- acter leads us into the stories and returns to close. "Tales of Light" K- 5th Grades Master storyteller and puppeteer,Hobey Ford,shines the spotlight on three Native American tales teaching about light and life. December is the season of light as we celebrate the turn from the darkest day of the year back toward the sun and longer days of light to come.The native people told numerous stories about fire and the sun to teach not only about light and warmth but to shine a light on many life lessons."Little Grandmother Spider Woman"-A Cherokee animal tale from North Carolina about the danger of fire.The story is also about false pride and boastfulness,or in other words,bragging.Through the story,we also learn about an important craft of the Cherokees: pottery."Raven steals the sun"-This Haida tale tells of Raven the Trickster's antics in stealing back the sun from a selfish chief who keeps the sun in a box for 1>n himself. "The Gift of Fire"-After gifts were given to all creatures but man,hummingbird flies to the sun to bring back a gift t(%i nuur. Man discovers the uses and dangers of fire in this catiti m.tn tale. "The Ant and The Grasshopper and More!" 2nd-6th grade and Family The Ant and the Grasshopper and More is a show of folk tales and variety inclu,l i n_ tried and true acts that Hobey has performed for years at various venues to entertain all age,, rl audiences. This performance can be staged outdoors for festivals or indoors for libraries an,.] ,�hurls. The performance includes The Ant and the Grasshopper from Hobey's show "Work Little Grandmother Spider Woman from World Tales,Hobey's Peepers Puppets,Chests r t I is I>og,The Roving Elf and Hobey's original rod puppets,the Foamies.In this show,The RoN i r I I I and the Foamies come right out into the audience. TEACHER WORKSHOPS AND INSTITUTES - Hobey is a teacher in conjunction with she Kenned c nter's Partnership in Education Program and is listed in their touring directory. Hobey has three teacher workshops that are ava i I;ihic for three to four hour sessions. The Magic of Peeper Puppets: Exploring Story Writing Through Puppetry - Ford believes puppetry is a m.:t uI teaching tool that activates students'creative thinking through play.In this workshop,he introduces participants to his patented lYcper, Puppet. Discover how to help your students learn the basics of creating numerous characters using the Peepers Puppet and hm� tr tc.tch your students to write and perform simple scripts, gaining knowledge about basic story structure,story sequence and the po\\L.1 t rt story in their lives--- by creating theater with just their hands. From Larvae to Butterfly:Metamorphosis Through Puppetry -using Hobey's"Foamier"Puppets or shadow puppci I--\.teachers create a unit to teach metamorphosis through puppetry. Telling Folktales with Shadow Puppets - Combining storytelling with shadow puppetry brings a variety of cultures i I t r i n the classroom through folktales. During this workshop,teachers become familiar with folktales from many cultures. Partici punt, learn shadow puppetry performance techniques and how to construct their own shadow puppets. Hobey Ford discusses the co r�truction of a shadow puppet theater,scripting a folktale into a play,and organizing a performance with students.Teachers may choose 10 �\ork with students to develop their own productions or to use the skills and knowledge to deepen the students'understanding and cnj(r\anent of folktales and literature from the curriculum. STUDENT WORKSHOPS - Hobey teaches two two hands-on workshops for students 2nd to 8th grades. Shadow Puppetry -Hobey combines storytelling with shadow puppetry and brings a variety of cultures to life in the cl.t,,n v m through folktales.During this workshop,Hobey will demonstrate shadow puppetry and teach students to make a simple' r,rlf puppet; basically a character's body on one or more sticks.Students will become familiar with tales from several different culture,. ul ti mately choosing one to illustrate with their own easily-made shadowpuppets and learn shadow puppetry performance technique, Writing Stories With Peepers -a workshop exploring story development and creative writing using Ford's patented l re r:v puppets.
