i NCYTE H i story 5 1. <br /> � j <br /> 1 Founded in 1983 by Gene Medler, NCYTE is a unique, non-profit company that 1 <br /> represents all that is good about participation in the arts by young people. j <br /> Ensemble members are drawn from a wide range of ethnic, religious and j <br /> economic backgrounds and reflect North Carolina's diverse population. j <br /> Selected by audition each year, these young ambassadors for our state have 1 <br /> 1 risen to an unprecedented level of performance skill that has been lauded j <br /> around the nation and abroad. The company serves to: j <br /> entertain and inform audiences about the universal nature of <br /> percussive dancing j <br /> ® preserve tap, an indigenous American dance form, and its j <br /> cultural origins j <br /> ® embrace the percussive dance forms of other cultures j <br /> ® explore and support the cutting edge of contemporary choreography 1 <br /> a give company members the opportunity to perform and be j <br /> recognized for their contribution to the quality of our lives j <br /> Members come from all over the state, but most of them live in the Raleigh- j <br /> Durham-Chapel Hill area. NCYTE holds auditions every September, and all j <br /> members are expected to audition each year. NCYTE members range in age 1 <br /> from 8-18. Some have as little as 2 years of dance experience before joining the j <br /> ensemble, while senior members may have 10 or more years of dancing classes j <br /> and experience. Regular rehearsals are every Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, j <br /> for about 3 hours. Additional rehearsals may be called in advance of some j <br /> Sperformances, and many members of the ensemble gather together on their 1 <br /> own, to learn new dances or brush up on their steps. <br /> In the spirit of learning and growing in technique and performance skills, j <br /> everyone in NCYTE is expected to be enrolled in tap classes (at a <br /> program/school of their choice) in addition to their regular NCYTE rehearsals. j <br /> *N Many members also take classes in ballet, jazz dance or modern dance. j <br /> Periodically, NCYTE brings in professional tap dancers and instructors from j <br /> around the world to conduct workshops for ensemble members and the larger j <br /> dance community. Occasionally music and drama teachers provide workshops <br /> to NCYTE to enrich their understanding of how music and dance effectively j <br /> � come together on the stage. j <br /> NCYTE is linked with the global tap community, and the ensemble commissions j <br /> S choreography from across the nation and abroad.
