North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble
Founded by JUBA award winning artistic director
Gene Medler in 1983, The North Carolina
Youth Tap Ensemble (NCYTE) entertains
audiences with cutting-edge contemporary
choreography along with traditional tap as it was
danced in its prime.
NCYTE is not your average youth dance
ensemble; in fact it is not your average dance
company at all. Imagine Stomp, Riverdance,
Vaudeville, Fred Astaire and Bring In Da Noise
all on the same bill -that's NCYTE! The style
of percussive dances includes South African
Gumboot, sand dancing, buck, a salute to
vaudeville, body percussion, jazz and much i Photo -Cerl
more. The music featured may be Blind Boy
Fuller, Brubeck or Mozart. This non-stop percussive dance review is a trip through time and into the future of an American
art form.
The list of choreographers reads like a "Who's Who"in the tap world, including Michelle Dorrance, Brenda Buffalino, and the
legendary Savion Glover. The company has toured or collaborated with the Greensboro Symphony, Squirrel Nut Zippers,
Mallarme Chamber Players, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and many jazz musicians around the nation and
world. They have toured internationally, performing in Rio de Janeiro, Vienna, Berlin, Heidelberg and Helsinki. NCYTE
appears annually at the two largest tap festivals in the US, New York City Tap Festival and The Chicago Human Rhythm
Project.
Rhythm...funk...innovation...excitement: that's the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble. One of the best youth tap
ensembles in the world, NCYTE features 40 dancers, ages 8 to 18,who hail from throughout North Carolina. Don't let
the word "youth"fool you. These dancers tear up the floor with poise, passion and professionalism. NCYTE honors the
traditions of this unique American form while infusing it with youthful energy, contemporary music, and innovative dances
from some of the world's most talented choreographers.
