Solar System Integrated Arts Lesson Plan
Musical Theatre
Central Elementary School
L Teacher-Led Movement
Mirror movements.
Teach hardest combinations first.
Use counts of 4/8 as a math tool (adding counts, multiplying sets, etc).
Once learned, demonstrate movements with the accompanying music.
Repeat several times for muscle memory to take over.
II. Atoms in Space
Have students float around as if an atom floating through space.
Use technique to teach gravity, weightlessness, etc.
Have students form "molecules" in various numbered groups.
Those left without a molecule can be re-directed to pre-set stations around room
involving space/solar systems lessons.
Use exercise as a way of working together.
Use exercise as a way of dividing into smaller groups.
III. Body-Led Movement
Have small groups stand in a circle.
Let first person create a movement and then the group imitates it.
Go to the second person and learn a second movement.
Go back to the first person and repeat the patter until all students have had a turn.
Relate this to memorizing poetry, math facts, etc.
Let children try their choreography to music and see if it "fits".
IV. Student-Led Movement
Freeze-Dance.
Have students free dance to music.
When music stops, have all students freeze like statues.
Give specific directions, linked to the lesson, on how to move.
(literal choreography: e.g. if you want to show that mercury is hot, have students
do movements that indicate they, or what they are touching, is hot.)
Continue until all concepts have been explored.
Then, have students get in small groups and create their own literal choreography
based on the content of the song or lesson.
Try it with music.
V.Show time
Have students link all of the different sections together in a cohesive,
choreographed piece that demonstrates the lesson.
Repeat, polish and embellish.
