The ArtsCenter
Always Inspiring.
December 2013
Dear Families:
In collaboration with The ArtsCenter, our class will be participating in a dance
residency that will connect to our study of Native American history within the third
grade social studies curriculum. The residency will be focused around a show we
saw at The ArtsCenter on November 21 — Native American Stories. During the
show, we will learned about traditional Cherokee legends that taught us about a
culture whose history and presence is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of our
own state. In addition to Cherokee stories, we heard modern tales from a variety
of Native American tribes, emphasizing the significance and presence of the art
of storytelling in contemporary times.
A teaching artist came into our classroom today for the first session and will
come in again on December 5, 9, 11 and 16. During the residency, students will
learn about how Native American dance and storytelling are so closely linked.
They will have a chance to create dances that embody animals and aspects of
daily life, just as the Native American tribes did. In addition, students will learn a
variety of dances representative of many cultures, such as the Appalachian
square dance, African dance and Mexican folk dance. At the end of the
residency, students will connect their local culture of storytelling through dance
with cultures around the world.
To support your child in this creative journey, please ask your child about his/her
experiences each day of the residency_
This residency is funded, in part, through grants from the Grable Foundation,
Nicholson Foundation, North Carolina Arts Council, Orange County Human
Services, and the Orange COUnty Arts Commission.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Sincerely,
