and how to use it without disrupting the atmosphere to blend ambient with
artificial, to create freeze action and ghostly blurred color.
In order to have the freedom to make strong photographs that convey the
mission and goals of the organizations I serve, I have built trust and confidence with
the families, the instructors, and the children who are already over-stimulated by
sight and sound. I will find pleasure in producing and viewing artwork for the
community that encourages tolerance and understanding of Autism and
communication disorders.
Previous Experience working with Community Outreach
With advanced degrees in Special Education and Imaging and Digital Arts, I
have built a career around using my photography to serve special populations.
In the early years of my career, I founded anImage Photography and Videography in
Washington, DC focusing on commercial and humanitarian work in health and
education. The current art advocacy project, the Beijing Impressions series, is a multi
media, traveling exhibition on display in 2014 in the Greenhill Art Center Gallery,
addressing issues of environmental pollution, wealth imbalance, urbanization, and
an aging population.
With a strong commitment to education, I served on the faculty of the
University of Maryland art department implementing the integration and transition
of film and wet darkroom to digital arts photography curriculum and the Photo
Outreach Experiential Learning program for my students. I served as the director
and founder of the Family Arts Enrichment Center, providing arts and leadership
opportunities for the university community.
My current initiative is my most comprehensive. While photographing
children with disabilities as they confront and overcome their fears of the water, I
am keenly aware of the extraordinary attributes of the Adapted Aquatics program
and immensely impressed with the successes and joy these families and their
children experience through their participation. As an educator, I watch a group of
trained volunteers exhibit patience and respect to teach the children the life skills of
water safety while the children struggle with their particular disabilities, sometimes
accentuated by the distracting environment of the pool itself. As a photographer, I
am able to record these moments, gifting the positive achievements to the families
and being an advocate for this type of intervention.
Included in this application are examples of the hybrid, multi-use approach
that I take as a humanitarian professional artist: Documentary,Abstract, and Gift
and samples of the wall panels from the 2014 Autism Society Awareness month
exhibition. I have included letters from project partner Amy Fowler of the Autism
Society, Lorraine Jorden, parent of student in the Adapted Aquatics class, Marian
Kaslovsky Recreation Specialist, Lauren Burianek lead instructor in the Adapted
Aquatics classes, and Holly Riddle, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
More imagery may be found on my Web site at www.barbaratyroler.com
