Purpose of the Project,Relevance to the Community,
Goals,and Success Factors
As a photographer, I observe the students struggling and the parents
worrying while a group of highly motivated volunteers work 1:1, sometimes 2:1
with the youth in the water. And I observe growth and perseverance. In capturing
the successes and joys, I hope to do my part in encouraging the students and
families to persist, and the volunteers to show patience. In making these
photographs available to the public, I hope to do my part to increase volunteer
involvement, make new connections for student internships, and encourage
additional funding for the programs.
Over the past few months, the classes have become very successful and have
been oversubscribed. Some families have not been able to register. There are many
people in our community who are interested in volunteering. I hope through my
contributions of strong evocative visual imagery and building community
connections, I may play a role in the continued success of and access to these types
of programs.
New statics show 1 in 68 children are being diagnosed on the Autism
spectrum. I continue to meet and collaborate with professionals who work with this
population and I will continue to contribute my skills and experience in art
education using photography as a tool for exploration and self-expression for
students with disabilities.
Community Partnerships to Date
Marian Kaslovsky,Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Chapel Hill Parks &
Recreation Adapted Recreation and Inclusion program
Robb English,Aquatic Supervisor Town of Chapel Hill, Creator Adapted Aquatics
Jeff York,Arts Administrator, Public and Cultural Arts Division,Town of Chapel Hill
Marylou Gelblum, PhD, Child Development Specialist
Yasmine White CEO &Founder,Voices together
Deborah Zuver, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Registered Drama
Therapist (LMFT, RDT), Director,Advocacy and Transition, Carolina
Institute for Developmental Disabilities, UNC (CIDD)
Holly Riddle,J.D., M.Ed.
Director, NC Council on Developmental Disabilities, 1990-2013
Policy and Research, NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental
Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services 2014-present
Amy Fowler, president of the Autism Society of North Carolina Orange Chatham
Beth Kuklinski, Founder, Director Jordan Lake School of the Arts
Artistic Experience
As an experienced artist, I have command over my tools to be able to use
them in ways that engender trust. As a photographic educator, i taught my students
to know their tools and to respect the environments they enter.
