Lorraine M.Jorden
2525 Booker Creek Rd, 113
Chapel Hill, NC 27514
To Whom It May Concern;
My family has come to know Ms. Barbara Tyroler as not just a photographer but also as a caring and
lovely person, concerned about children with handicaps and wanting to portray them as the beautiful
people that they are, loved and adored, and with wonderful abilities.
Barbara has been using her gifts as an artist to encourage and uplift myself and my son,Alessandro, age
11, by photographing him as he learns to swim at the adapted PE program through the town of Chapel
Hill Parks and Recreation Department. Her photographs show him raising his arms to do the freestyle
crawl and floating on his back, relaxed and happy,in the arms of his assistant,Julia. Alessandro is so
pleased when he looks at these photos of himself swimming, and excitedly points to himself in the
water. As his mother, I am sure they encourage him to keep swimming.
Also, anyone who looks at these photos(and l do hope they are displayed soon)will also be amazed by
not only their beautiful artistic quality, but also by how joyously they celebrate children swimming and
learning to explore their surroundings. That Barbara chooses to celebrate the capabilities of
handicapped children as they learn a life-long sport only adds to this sentiment. The way Barbara
chooses to photograph her subjects and her ability to capture the magic moment show a great artistry.
I do hope you will approve Barbara's grant so that she can keep providing this wonderful service to
document these handicapped children who so need our encouragement. I think it is important to
promote the abilities of these children to the community,so they will be more accepted and thought of
well. I think Barbara Tyroler is just the right person with a great amount of sensitivity to do this.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you need further information.
Sincerely,
Lorraine Jorden
