To whom it may concern:
This letter's purpose is in support for Barbara Tyroler's photography project with Adapted Aquatics.
I am the lead instructor for Adapted Aquatics, and have been working with the program for over 5
years. The class provides lessons on water safety and swimming skills to children aged 5-19 with
developmental disabilities and is particularly geared towards children with Autism Spectrum
Disorders(ASD).Volunteers work one-on-one with the children, and t work with the pairs
individually to promote new skills and comfort in the water.
Barbara has been photographing my class since the early summer, and it has made a tremendous
impact in parent satisfaction, volunteer accountability, and overall class fulfilment. The parents
enjoy seeing the progress that their children are making from one class to the other, and also
appreciate receiving hard copies of the photographs to hang at home to motivate their children. The
volunteers also receive hard copies of some photographs, reminding them of their inspiration and
motivation in working with these children.
In taking the pictures, Barbara is careful to not disturb the lessons. All of the photographs are candid
and natural. She does a great job working with the lighting within the indoor pool and loves talking
to the parents about a child's progress. In addition to my own excitement with the project, the
feedback from my supervisor, the parents, the children, and the volunteers has all been
overwhelmingly positive.
I highly recommend this project for your grant,as it has been a very positive influence on the class's
structure and function.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Lauren Burianek
Adapted Aquatics Instructor
Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation
(704)517-7062
